Comparative Bioaccumulation of PAH and BTEX in Malapterurus electricus (Siluriformes: Malapteruridae) and its Enteric Parasite, Electrotaenia malopteruri Sampled from Lekki Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract Contamination of Lekki lagoon by petrogenic chemicals such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX) has been widely reported. The study was aimed at investigating the bioaccumulation PAH BTEX in Malapterurus electricus collected from Lagos, Nigeria. analyzed intestine, water, sediment samples using 8260B Agilent 7890B gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). While PAHs were tested same media flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Histopathological analysis fish intestine conducted haematoxylin eosin (H&E) stains. Parasite intensity, antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation activities investigated fish. parasitic infection detected Electrotaenia malopteruri. parasite showed weak no depurative capacities for respectively. decrease superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) conjunction with an increase Malondialdehyde (MDA) characterized relatively higher susceptibility among male Varieties tissue injuries increased standard length groups. Results suggest that lengthier uninfected M. more susceptible than shorter infected ones. demonstrated promising tendency enteric parasite, E. malopteruri depurate chlorobenzene, o-xylene, m+p-xylene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene its host fish, electricus, while poorly mediated parasite.
